φώς (phos) + γραφή (graphê)

= light + representation by means of lines / drawing
= drawing with light
i really wanted "drawingwithlight" but it was taken (one of those annoying empty blogs that steal your prospective URL).
a recent regretful event has painfully slit my eyes open to see how idle i have been, unable to wake up from a dream and spark it into reality. and now that i have, i stand in a room in the heart of my heart and i see unpacked boxes. closed windows. cobwebs. layers of dust.
today i start to clean this room. and i open the windows and start to unpack the boxes. today marks a revamp in discovery. today is the day i stop living in my head. today is the day i start living in this room in the heart of my heart. so it pumps and makes me breathe and makes me see my dream in front of me, alive as a manifestation of everything that floats about in my head.
the magic began when my father handed my young and incredibly ball-like self his Canon EOS 88 at a filipino community gathering in singapore. my parents were in a dance and he asked me to take nice shots of them. the beauty in handling a manual camera is that there is an excited anticipation of how the photos will look like when they're developed. i was quite disappointed when we found out that most of my first roll of photos turned out dark. my father said, "i should have fixed the settings first because you didn't know." and then proceeded to say that the photos had good composition. i was shocked at this new element, earlier on thinking that clearness and brightness defined a photograph. i got excited.
from that first incident in the previous paragraph, i shuttled to and from a camera to a video camera, but as i entered high school a camera was hard not to have. i saw photographs in almost everything around me. i have over a thousand photos i have kept over the past years since i started to carry photography on my own accord. i shared these photos, i never hid them. but today i realize i have always hid what i really see, what makes me capture the moment.
it's not easy for me to articulate how i look at things to make them photographs. to make them be meaningful for me. past attempts exist, but were futile. there are little pieces in my multiply site. little pieces in my old blog. the spark came quick and often, but died just as fast because what i did never felt like it was enough. but today i begin trying again, and trying harder.

the difference between how you and me share art and how javi and i share art is that you are too critical with what you make. you forget why you enjoy it in the first place. creativity is not being critical. art chooses us. not the other way around. we are just mediums. willing and open like the Blessed Mother. you are open adi. but you are not willing.
maybe this time you will be.
