005 : portable world

today was a snow day. real snow this time, thick enough for me to catch two little girls all dressed up to go out to their little fenced garden and throw snowballs at each other while i walked to the bus stop in the morning. i had wished i were able to take a photo, but i was running late.

this isn't a photo of snow because by the time i got out of school, it had mostly melted. bad decision on my part, because i thought i was going to get a chance then, since the weather forecast had said it would be snowing again almost noon.

(a note: bringing the camera to school was quite the best decision i've had so far this year, albeit this year only having lasted 5 days. it felt like i had brought a friend who had an invisibility cloak.)

anyhow, i think if i had been able to take a photo of lone footsteps outside my house, it would have been really hard for me to choose today's photo.

i watched this man walking slowly, thoughtfully down the sidewalk (in the background) as i waited for the bus number 80 which comes round the corner in the background. he stopped by the far end of the brick wall, pulled out a book, and started to read, slowly pacing the length of the brick wall. he lingered down the far end sometimes.

you can see his step: small and absentminded. his left foot makes no haste in lifting itself from the ground again to make the next step. even his turns were leisured, and used to look up for the bus he was waiting for. his soul was obviously in a different world. i couldn't get a glimpse of the book he was reading, except that the cover was in purple.

i wish i could do this again. i am not this free-armed (haha) that often anymore. i bring two notebooks and a textbook to school, if not all of that in an A3 art folder. i watched him and thought of all the books i had sitting on the shelf, unread.

i miss transcending my own reality with a book. but perhaps, i do that a different way now, getting lost in my own world instead of another's.
