033: snow day

i thought it would be quite amusing to put up a photo that shows quite the opposite of what today was like. contrary to the impression this photo makes, today was an absolute snow day in south london. i woke up to children screaming outside the window, and the sight of flying snowballs.

everything within sight was consumed by snow. at least a foot of it, in fact. deep footprints, snowmans. cars had coats of white.

it was quite a sight to see. and a whole different story of what it felt like. snow wasn't even wet, unless i really squeezed it together. snow wasn't like sand, all dense and heavy. snow was light, like tiny, tiny tiny tiny jacks stacked together carelessly but with intention: tables, tops of brick walls, benches all had white ghosts on top of them.

liana and i had to scoop snow from the sun roof that covered the kitchen back door, because it was only horizontally supported by a wooden bar that was already bent under the weight of the probably-more-than-a-foot-deep of snow that had settled on the plastic roof.

then, as children who'd never experienced snow before (except one time in Lake Tahoe in i think 1995 that we can barely remember anyway), we just had to try and make a snow angel. wasn't that glamorous, and didn't turn out as cute as they do on films and cartoons. i suppose we'd needed shorter, more similar-length four limbs for that. hahaha.

yes, school was cancelled. and it's closed tomorrow, too. there were no buses today. the wheel isn't a very handy invention in this weather. we watched the news in the evening and other people had a blast sledding down slopes and making snow fortresses.

snow is not overrated. a woman, whose name i have forgotten, couldn't have said it better: (paraphrased) people are much nicer in this weather. the snow has slowed everyone down, so everyone's not in such a rush, and they're actually saying, "good morning!"

i think snow is quite magical. tomorrow my sister and i will make a real snow-man. not three balls stacked on top of each other, but a life-size being with four limbs. i hope it turns out good.
